2 Peter 1:1 (KJV); Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
A SERVANT’S PATTERN
The heart of service precedes the privilege of position. Simon Peter introduces himself firstly as a servant of God before the fact that he is an apostle of Jesus Christ.
This reveals to us God’s mind on the pattern of service. You are a servant before you are a prophet; a servant before you are a pastor, a servant before you are a deacon and a servant before you are a bishop.
We live in a generation where this order has been upset. We have deacons, apostles and bishops who do not know the first thing about service but are content to swing their titles around like beacons of honour.
This extends to all the other areas of life. You are a servant before you are a manager, a servant before you are a director, a servant before you are a chairman and a servant before you are a minister in your nation.
Embracing the responsibility gives authority to the title. Authority without responsibility is tyrannical, oppressive and ungodly.
Every calling is for service.
God’s name be praised!
