John 4:6-8 (KJV); Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
THE JESUS PATTERN
In my earlier years of ministry, there were moments when I did not exercise caution in the way I prophesied to people. For example, the Lord would reveal to me that the reason why a particular individual was struggling in a specific area of their life was because they were being bewitched by a certain relative. I would also mention the name of the person doing the bewitching. Sometimes, I said these things to people who were not stable enough to handle the information I had given them and as such, they would return home and fight the people causing them trouble. Sometimes, I would mention sensitive facts publicly.
As I grew, I learnt that even when I see certain facts in the spirit, I can only mention them if the Holy Spirit tells me to. I also learnt the importance of discretion in a man to whom God reveals the secrets of other men.
Jesus set this pattern for us in our theme scripture. It was not an accident of fate for Christ to meet the Samaritan woman alone at the well. He knew that He would be meeting a woman with a very graphic moral history and that their conversation would reveal His knowledge of the fact that she had had five husbands and that the man she was presently living with was not her husband.
I have seen ministers of the gospel parade people before congregations and read out the secret details of their lives and their moral failings in the same way one reads a news bulletin to an enraptured audience. Is this the Jesus pattern? No.
Broadcasting all the gory details of someone’s life is not the mark of the maturity of a prophet. Just because someone does not say it all does not mean that they do not see it all. It does not make them an inferior minister, it only means that they are wiser.
As a minister of the gospel, you must understand that such liberties in God with which we have been graced are not an opportunity for a public performance with us at centre stage. We are dealing with the lives of men and how we treat them deeply matters to God.

PRAYER: Father, I thank You for this knowledge. I minister in wisdom because I understand the patterns that You have set for me in scripture. I will never stumble or defile the brethren by the liberties that I enjoy in You. Everything that I do and speak is seasoned with grace, to the glory of Your name, Amen.
